2004 Volkswagen Golf temperature guage faulty

my mk 4 golf.. temperature guage occasionally works but mostly doesnt..when it does, it goes to normal then imeadiately goes back to cold ?why is this, any ideas? thanks

It probably needs a new temperature sender switch on the engine
