1998 Volkswagen Golf fuel consumption problem

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 1998
Variant: golf 3. recon engine 1.8
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi, my golf uses alot of petrol since I had a recon engine installed.I dont know exactly how much to the gallon but in money I know its huge....... I have had auto elec tests, VW have tested it and did an engine diagnostic test and came up with a worn out cam belt...does that effect fuel???? what else can it be? I also notice that sometimes the petrol gage decreases rapidly from one trip to another....it is an 1800 engine and the blue sensor in the front of the engine might be the problem? is this possible? I dont know what else to do....

A " worn out cambelt " would not show on any diagnostic test . If a cambelt fails , apart from the engine stopping , major engine problems . If it was a recon engine , a new belt should have been fitted at same time . Was the engine supplied and fitted by VW ?
