2004 Volkswagen Golf idling

I took car to a garage yesterday as the revs idle below 8000 and sometimes when Ihave decelerated the alternator light appears. I have taken it to be checked and the alternator is fine though according to the mechanics the problem was "throttle housing and idle control". Is this a common problem with VW Golfs?

I think you mean 800 rpm ? As suggested , that is a common remedy for that fault .
