1998 Vauxhall Tigra hazard lights flash for 30 sec. when doors are opened

Everytime I open my car door the indicators flash for about 30 seconds, it doesn't make a difference if the engine is on. surely this can't be right?

no its been doing it since i bought it last month - there is a red light on the passenger side of the car which also flashes, i asume this is some type of imobiliser however im almost sure the hazards shouldn't flash like they do for that long?
