The cooling fan is on most of the time and is off for short periods. It is very loud when on.I don't understand it as I have checked all the connections and they seem to be fine.Any ideas what the problem could be? Also I'm worried that the fan will burn it's self out.

First thing to check would be coolant level .If o.k check / replace engine coolant temp sensor .Or could disconnect and see if fan stops .
