2005 Vauxhall Signum engine failure

Background- car out of warranty by 8 months
No previous problems from car then started the car to go to work last Wednesday & engine was turning over- really rough sounding! With no warning lights on dash then after i checked oil level ( oK) I proceeded to try and drive. The car was strugling to get the revs & power up to get out of 1-2nd gears after a couple of minutes, there was a couple of loud clunks and clanks....and then the car cut out with smoke out the back exhaust. Warning lights that came in at this point were low coolant and exhaust managment. Got a tow to nearby Vauxhall garage whereby after only listening to the engine and seeing the low coolant warning they have advised that it would be best to get a recon engine fitted. ( to the tune of ~ £3000).
COuld you advise on what you reckon has happened to the engine and what would be the best course of action to now take for me...bearing in mind that the car only has a book price of 4-5K now.

i suspect the timing chain has snapped. this happened to a friend of mine with his vectra 2.2 petrol. and that too was just out of warranty. i told him to go back to vauxhall and complain like hell seening as they peformed all servicing from new. after a lot of kicking and screaming, he got a new engine fitted but did have to pay some towards the labour. i cant help any more than that. good luck!!!

Hi just had similar symptoms with my signum today its a 1.9 dti (150bhp) Just getting on the motorway and it lost power, pulled onto hard shoulder and on idle it sound like its missing on one cylinder thought it maybe an injector gone, but now ive read this could it be the timing chain? Do they go on Diesels aswell? Anyone!!
