First thing would be to check that you are getting correct voltage to the starter motor when cranking ,you will need an assistant and a volt meter to check this.if this is ok you could be looking at a starter motor,if it,s not then maybe ignition switch,or relay.

the starter motor seems fine it turns the engine over but the engine takes some time to fire . I turn the ignition off for a few seconds and it fires as soon as I turn the key.

can you tell me if the starter will fail if there is a problem with the fuel pump.
