2000 Vauxhall Signum car stalling.cutting out when slowing down at light

Car: Vauxhall Signum
Year: 2000
Variant: 3.0 diesel auto
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
hi,

I am posting this problem on behalf of my father who is a pensioner and doesnt understand the internet.
He is at his wits end with his vauxhall signum - it cuts out and stalls when he slows down - the revs are irratic and then they just fall to the bottom and it cuts out he says he sometimes has trouble restarting it and be holding up a q of traffic at the lights which panics him. He has taken it into a vauxhall dealer who very kindly ripped him off for £100.00 just to look at it shake his head and then say it needs a more in depth look!! which will cost him even more money. He now taken to not driving it because he;s afraid it will just cut out again....can someone please help.....I had a similar problem with my Mitsubshi Pinin and it was the Idler value..but I don;t know if his car has one of these....

Did they not carry out a diagnostic scan and see if any faults showed ? You might be better to take to a car diesel specialist to get it checked out , usually can find one in local Yellow pages . Or phone first and ask for advice , idea of problem and cost .Could be something simple but needs checking first .

Many Thanks for your reply.
After speaking to my father he tells me that he did take it initially to a Diesel specialist who promptly told him that they did not have the software to rectify this problem and suggested he go to the Vauxhall dealers - the check the dealers did that cost £100.00 was just an initial diagnostics check which revealed nothing and they said an indepth check would have to be done costing a further £208.00 to see if they could find anything ( a total rop-off in my opinion!!)

My father now doesnt know what to do as he cannot afford a further £208.00 just like that...
I was hoping that perhaps someone with the same make and model has had the same problem and solved it, and it wasnt too expensive.

I agree with you on the charges they are passing on to your father for them to check out this fault , especially when nothing is getting done .There can be many reasons for the problem such as crankshaft position sensor which normally fails when hot , fuel pressure switch etc . etc .Is there no local , good , independant garage that you could use as their charges would be a lot , lot cheaper than main dealers .Really hard to diagnose cause from forum , especially when others cant find it with the equipment and the car available for checking .Hope you get it fixed o.k and its something minor .
