alternator is spinning, and belt is taught. Fuel warn light on, Oil light on, Batt light on, Handbrake light on. Packed up all of sudden whilst going down motorway. no warnings at all. just stopped charging. Had air con on full blast at time of failure, and doing 3000 rpm

sounds like the surge diode has blown there for you have expirenced a over charge from the alternator but would get this checked out first just to be sure hope this helps
