The grinding noise could be the abs kicking in for some reason. As for the play in the steering wheel, check that the hub is not loose, also check the drive shaft joint...

If it has reluctor rings fitted there may be one cracked which can cause that issue.but not 100percent on type of detection system on that model.:)

Thanks for the help about my brakes on the Vauxhall Monterey, major major problem now, 185.000 miles on the clock and it seems that the cambelt has now gone, I have had a couple of suggestions about getting the thing repaired but impartial advice would be welcome,is it worth getting it done or scrapping the car ?
Thanks
Ken

It all depends on whether that is an interference engine and what damage is caused to head , valves etc . Could be more than car is worth .
