1998 Vauxhall Monterey check engine light

Car: Vauxhall Monterey
Year: 1998
Variant: 3.2 V6 Petrol, 7 seat, Diamond
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Just picked up my car after MOT. It had a new exhaust, o2 sensor and Cat to get it through emissions. They told me that it still only just passed and they thought it was overfuelling. (It was kwik fit and although they tried hard, it was clear that they didn't know what the problem was).
Driving it today, initially it didn't kick down properly. After a while it started to run really well, but the check engine light came on. When I stopped the exhaust smelled like unburnt petrol and was black (sooty) at exit.
The o2 sensor is a cheap aftermarket one - could that be the problem, or do I need to get it to vauxhall so they can 'plug it in'?

I would get car into another garage rather than a fast fit centre and get it scanned .

if you want to scan it yourself you can get a code reader from argos cat no 740/2742 i bought one it helped pin point what the problem was then got problem fixed
