1993 Vauxhall Frontera blown engine?

Car: Vauxhall Frontera
Year: 1993
Variant: 2.3 turbo diesel
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Just bought a 2.3 diesel Frontera which sadly expired on the journey home. Seller has done a bunk so I am after some advice on what may have happened.
Car ran at about 3/4 on the temp gauge. Was a bit sluggish but not smokey (apart from a bit of black smoke on gearchange) After approx 100 miles lost all power whilst travelling at 65mph. Muffled bang followed by white smoke from exhaust and small amount from engine bay. Also dumped most, if not all, of its engine oil over the hard shoulder (and continued to leak oil once towed home) Engine will start but sounds very rough. Any ideas on what caused the engine failure and likely repair cost

not to sure of the reason why it went on you but if the guy you brought the frontera off has done a bunk i would be curious to know if the car is straight and not a ringer ie stolen and wanted a quick sale but if all is ok in that department then the cheapest option for you i would say is find a replacement complete engine for it then its just a straight swap instead of doing a repair to find it needs more things and more well the list could go on hope this helps
