Vauxhall Frontera 4 wheel drive does not work when pressed on dashboard

When the 4wheel drive is set in motion nothing happens apart from the light, flashes. Over time it has taken longer to lock in and no longer locks in at all. Could this be something to do with the air . I cannot find a manual for this make and model anywhere.

You could have a quick check on the vac pipes for leaks at nearside wing , near bulkhead .They go to the actuator on the axle .
