1995 Vauxhall Frontera rear axle oil loss through breather pipe

Car: Vauxhall Frontera
Year: 1995
Variant: 2.0 Sport
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
My Frontera Sport is losing oil through the top end of the breather pipe. The axle is well coated in oil now. I had the oil level checked and the loss was not huge a few weeks ago.
I was wondering if anyone knew why oil is being forced up the breather pipe and whether this indicates a bigger problem with the diff or something else. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Am a bit worried the axle could run dry and this become a very expensive job for a much loved but old car that I could not really afford to throw large sums of money at.
Thanks
Alan

on a level surface check oil level is correct have you had any new tyres fitted if so are they the correct profile front and back

Thanks Roverman, have checked both. Oil was below level and tyres are non - directional road tyres. There is no diff whine and other unusual noise. Every mechanic I have asked has no idea why it should be doing this?
