1991 Vauxhall Cavalier over revs then wont fire properly then corrects itself

Suddenly starts revving high,then wont run properly....chug,chug! Sometimes engine will cut out while this is going on but not always. Then it just corrects itself. Need help...fast...please.

Sounds like a slipping clutch .

could be a fault with metering head. Have you changed fuel filter recently.
