Warning light and alarm sounds but following turning engine off there is a fan that starts up and runs for a while. Next time I start the car the alarm and warning light have disappeared ! The funny thing is, the performance never seems to falter.

Sounds as if it is the DPF regenerating which is perfectly normal . Apart from the noise you may also notice heat increase while the process is taking place .

Thank-you Wittingehame for your quick response. That is most reassuring. I have looked on many different forums and the reasons some people give as you may imagine are so vastly varied I really didn't know what to believe. I shall continue driving it and enjoying it but keep my ears and eyes open. such a shame because I bought this car as it had only completed 32,000 miles and I didn't think it should be such a major problem after such a short mileage. My thanks once again.

As you say , keep an eye on levels and for any warning signs just to be certain . They do benefit from a good , fast run which clears / burns of the soot whist performing the regeneration process every so often . There are plenty of articles available on this . Happy motoring !
