2003 Toyota Yaris oil leek and rattling noise

Car: Toyota Yaris
Year: 2003
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My rocker gasket needs changing as theres an oil leek.. ive also got a rattling noise coming from somewhere under my bonnet. Would the noise be from the car loosing oil? And doest it cost alot for the rocker gasket to be changed? I bought the part and my friend was going to fix it, but the power stearing oil was in the way so needs to be done by a professional

Oil leak unlikely to be anything to do with the rattle so could be anything but check the heat shields round the exhaust.
And I'd need to know engine size and type to gives you the hours needed for a gasket change,
But usually around an hours labour.

I have a 998cc engine size... and i think it was just a rubber sealed gasket. Nothing major. The usual garage i take it to just told me to buy a new car as he thinks the rattling would be a big job and its not worth the money. But my friend whos a apprentice merchanic thought it was a certain part (cant remember what he said it was called) and said it would cost £30 for the part. I just need another opinion whether to get the car fixed or buy a new one. Also my mot is up in october. And id need it all fixed before then

Better,
Always quote make/model/year and engine size when communicating about cars.
My hours guide does state around an hour to do the gasket.
But as the cheapest garage around me starts at around £45+ the dreaded an hour you've an idea of costs.
So I'd say get your friend to do it.
As for the car being scrap put it in for an Mot and see just what it will fail on first.
No point in getting anything fixed if it is indeed a real dog.

Timing chain rattle is a common fault on that car .Your car has a value just now with a current, though short MOT for trading in purposes .Let the MOT run out and , depending on condition and needed repairs after Mot , could be worthless / uneconomical to repair .Worth thinking about ?

Timing chain excessively worn may be cause of rattle on your car .

Another possible cause of engine rattle could be worn water pump .

Ok thanks. Do both those parts cost alot of it was that making the noise?

Cam chain is around 4 hours plus parts,
pump is around one hour plus parts.
but again I state put it in for an MOT test now,
no point in repairing anything if it's going to fail the test big time.
