2000 Toyota Rav-4 locking wheels burn smell

Car: Toyota Rav-4
Year: 2000
Variant: 2.0
Categories: Leaks & Noises
I could smell a burning rubber smell the other day when I had stopped at traffic lights. Tonight the wheels locked on me and i went sliding over the road. The burning smell was stronger and seems to be coming from the drivers front wheel. I have abandoned the car as it is unsafe to drive what can it be. It also was struggerling to get up a hill. I am taking it to the garage first thing.

sounds like brake pad friction material burning if this is some thing you can do yourself remove the wheel and have a look at the caliper/brake pad material at this point remove caliper only if you now what you are doing of course and have a assistant to operate the brake pedal slowly to work the piston in the caliper and have some plumbing pliers to reset the piston home in the carrier this way the piston is worked in and out to free it up hope this helps once that is done you might need some more pads as the old ones will probably be cooked

Sounds like the brake has binded on. get a mechanic to strip down the side causing the problem, get him to inspect the caliper. May just need freed off and lubricated but doing this is sometimes a temporary measure and the fault may re-occur. Get the brake pads and probably the discs replaced too for safety sake, I know it's more expensive but brakes are important.
