Started without obvious cause. Like hot bicycle tyres. Can be while driving but there in cold car. No obvious mechanical problem. Thermostat working fine.

Thanks for that suggestion. The problem is a bit weird as the smell seems to come from different places on different days. I've sprayed fabric freshener of the seats this evening although that isn't that logical but the vents didn't seem to be the source either. Hard to see under the car to check for roadkill residue or suchlike!
