Car drives through the gearbox until 4th is selected the engine just Revs and no drive

Could be solenoid issue inside g,box ,requires plugged into suitable diagnostic equipment to find out ,guide further checks.

Never worked on one but see if this applies,
Check the transmission temp sensor, since the Jimny does not change into 4th until the sensor reads above about 30 degrees Celsius. So may be your sensor is sending wrong reading to the TCM.
and
The auto transmission on the Jimny has 2 positions for drive. When the shift lever is to the left, it will shift from 1st to 4th. If you move the shift lever slightly to the right, it will only shift from 1st to 3rd.

thanks for the info guys I think its poss the gearbox temp sensor .but don't know where I would get one from??
