Intermitant grinding at rear

Ihave a 2000 jimny that has a loud grinding noise that comes on and after 50 yards theres a loud thump and noise goes it does not happen daily but is a pain when it is there I have been told possible transfer box .can any body help

Impossible to tell you what the exact cause is ,I can only advise you check the drive train item,s props halt joint,s,driveshaft,s .If not able to then you will require a tech to look at it,noises are always a difficult one.

as above also check rear brakes check rear springs and bushes

i have it to tech guys who went through every thing but could not find anything .then on test run the problem came on 3 times and tech guy related it to as though trying to engage gear without using clutch they looked at vac pipes but no fault was found .and it could be the transfer box .

Your best bet would be a gearbox specialist,there maybe something else causing your issue.

i have had gearbox looked at and no problem there on way to garage the noise came on louder and very light metallic sound lasted half a mile then drove as good as new I had my window down and the noise sounded under rear of drivers seat and same as sharpening a knife on a grinding wheel I am now at a loss 2 big bills and no solution any more help would be gratefull
