when going through the gears getting up towards top end sometimes i can smell petrol fumes,the petrol needle not altering.

Check for fuel leakage - all connections, lines and the components in the fuel system. Check if fuel tank is overfilled. Fill only to automatic shut-off. Check charcoal canister filter in Evaporative Emissions Control system is clogged and if vapor leaks from this EEC system lines.
