Fans start blowing cold and engine temp drops and car becomes sluggish, AA said head gasket may have gone went to garage topped coolant up and running fine but it has done it again tonight and engine coolant still present

Agree with AA , possible head / gasket fault . Carry out a block test to confirm or not .

Possibly the thermostat stuck open? Mine was running cold and uonoy getting around 22mpg. Get yourself a cheap OBD tool from eBay, connect to a free app like OBD scanner and make sure your engine gets up to around 85°. Mine wouldn't go past 66°. It's about £100 to have the thermostat replaced. I got mine done today after nearly 2 years of wondering why my fans were never very hot yet my engine temp gauge looked normal.
