When removed to find cause, I found than the area where side steps fitted onto the body were showing serious signs of cracking in the bodywork, on both sides. Poss not a problem if vehicle had been driven solely on tarmac but I do a fair bit of driving on forest tracks, so reckon, increased vibration and weight of stainless steel steps caused cracking. Waiting on dealer confirming this is a warranty issue. Fingers crossed.

I've had the same problem, I only drive on tarmac, first set replaced under warranty due to rattling and paint flaking off, new set rattling like hell already, only been on a few weeks

Problem soled by SSangyong under warranty. With side steps off, area around step mounting locations plated and strengthened to support steps. No more rattling.
