1996 Skoda Octavia preheater light comes on during normal driving

the preheater light(glow plug)comes on erratically during driving affecting the acceleration of the car.Recently the car "died" when in the right hand lane of a dual carriageway- scary!! Having pulled over and turned off the engine and re-started the problem disappeared but the light still appears.

So many possible causes you really need to get it scanned with VAG-COM and see what shows .
