Rattling/mettalic noise on start up

2003 Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi turbo
Car: Skoda Octavia
Year: 2003
Variant: 1.9tdi turbo
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I am getting a noisy rattling/metallic sound only occurs on start up when cold (in warm weather does not do it)
When warm it does not do it at all

Could be something simple like exhaust heat shield , hard to diagnose without hearing noise . Any exhaust centre will give car a free checkover while you wait .

if its only on start up then might be worn starter motor,do you get noise at any particular rpm?if so can you reproduce the noise by revving the engine to certain rpm and pinpointing the noise

The noise actually starts once the engine is running not during start up and it is only doing it when the weather gets cooler so engine is cooler. It does not do it when outside temp. is about 18c +
It has on the odd occasion done it when warm but very rarely
