Engine noise and Temperature Gauge

2009 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi
Car: Skoda Octavia
Year: 2009
Variant: 1.9TDi
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Bought this ex-demonstrator car in October 2009. The electronic temperature gauge started going up and down erratically followed by what sounds like a fan under the bonnet making aeroplane noises!!! When switching the car off this sound continues for at least 5 seconds. The temperature gauge and this "aeroplane" noise problem run alongside each other - if the temperature gauage is working there is no noise and vice versa. There are no fault indicator lights coming up on the dashboard.

Skoda have used their "diagnostic equipment" and said it didn't show anything was wrong (the temperature gauge and noise stopped when pulling into their car park!).

Any ideas please as I'm due to take it back to them this week and want to be armed!!

The "aeroplane noise " sounds like the electric coolant fan cutting in . It cuts in when the engine gets to a certain temp i.e hot , to cool engine and then cuts off.
