Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Have 2001 octavia elegance automatic - every two weeks or so (and normally on hot starts) the engine revs erratically reving up and down, when I stop at lights and put car into netreul the revs continue to jump up and down then finally engine dies.

Does anyone have any idea's - last time this happened i left car unused for 2 weeks and problem went away?

Happened to me a couple of years ago with a 2000 Octavia. - The engine raced for no reason (but didn't stall).

I took it in for a normal service at a Skoda Servis point and their computer monitoring identified that the engine thermometer was faulty.

The engine thermometer passes info to the automatic choke which sends extra petrol to the engine when the engine is cold (just started). I'm old enough to remember manual chokes - which had to be pulled out on the dashboard for the first few minutes of driving.

It was a cheap and simple fix though for the service people. It added just £20 or £40 to the price of the service (though this was Poland, it might be more in UK).
