2014 Skoda Octavia unable to put car into gear.

I can mount the car into reverse or first gear when starting the engine. After this I can sometimes change through up to 3rd or 4th gear. After that once car goes into neutral I am unable to put it into any gear. Problem sometimes improves when I turn engine off and restart.
No warning lights.

Could be gear selector / shifter cables at fault , check that first . Could also check clutch fluid level
