Harsh engine noise

Engine produces a very harsh noise between about 3500 and 4000 rpm in all gears or when revved stationery. Disappers above 4000. Very slight similar noise at 2000 rpm.
Doesn't seem to affect performance (no missing).

That engine can tend to be a bit noisy , especially when now 15 yrs old.
