Trying to select first gear selects reverse

When stationary, and putting the car in first (upper left of the selector - but NOT pushing down and across by mistake), the car will sometimes select reverse instead. I've not seen any other posts about this, but it is happening. I have to repeat, this isNOT me inadvertently pushing the lever down and across - this happens when in the first gear slot.

There should be a detent / spring or some other form to restrict movement through the gear change gate accidentally without using it .You need to check out gear selector linkage / set up .

Can't seem to respond to whittingehame - thanks for the reply, but it's definitely not going past the gate. It's going into where 1st should be, yet selecting reverse. And it's intermittent and random.
