2013 Skoda Octavia erratic onboard computer readings

The average fuel consumption readings crash periodically giving haywire figures for average consumption since start and thus also since refuelling and long term. Happens every 2 to 4 weeks with local driving. Unable to get any satisfactory explanations from Skoda main dealers.
Also suspect that this problem may be linked to failure of the engine cutout feature to operate occasionally when car stops and clutch is released and for the fan to go on operating long after the engine is switched off which may also be linked to this problem. In a quandary what to do about it though the car is still under warranty. Any advice about this please. thank you.

Get them to check for software updates to fix random start /stop errors which I believe there are faults with. Also any other relevant updates which may cause other problems . Either engine running hot when fan running for that length of time or faulty fan sensor .Fuel consumption fault may be caused by faulty fuel tank sensor .If getting fobbed off , contact Skoda customer services and complain otherwise you could have costs fixing after warranty ceases .

I suspect being a diesel you have a particulate filter.The fuel consumption and fan running are probably a result of a regeneration or an interupted regen due to short lourneys.A good long run with a good average speed should help

Good shout re. DPF regeneration , forgot about that .Especially if burning smell and heat increase noticed at same time as fan going .

Thanks for the suggestion no.2 to my problem. This seems to be on the right lines but I don't understand what the particulate filter is and does and what is being regenerated? Could you explain. Thank you.

Thanks for very helpful suggestions. I think the diesel particulate filter is indeed at the root of the problem but what I don't understand is why the 2 main dealers I have spoken to (in Mansfield and Derby) didn't suggest this when I spoke to them.
I am also a little concerned that the reading I finally get when the inboard computer collapses is 6.9 mpg. If this reading is correct during the 10 mins or more it takes for the DPF to regenerate I could be using 1 or even 1.5 galls of fuel (5 - 10 ltrs) and might run out of fuel before I can get to a petrol station if the the tank is already low when the 'regeneration' starts. Any comments?

Low fuel level will prevent active regeneration taking place. As a general rule ΒΌ tank is required
