2001 Skoda Octavia car will not start

Over the last few weeks the car on a number of occasions reluctant to start due to what I thought was battery problems. Changed the battery yesterday, everything works (lights, radio etc) but when the key is turned to start the engine, nothing. Except the temperature switch keeps flashing.
Over the last few weeks there has been a few cases of the temperature warning light coming on ( flashing) again a couple of minutes after the engine has started.It doesn't come on after the engine has been stopped and restarted.
Anyone any ideas?
