Intermittent Noise / Groan

2001 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI Ambiente 167000 Miles

I am starting to get an intermittent noise / bearing noise from the L/H front when I am driving the Car. Last night in the course of a 20 Mile journey I probbly heard it a half dozen times and it probably lasts for anything between 10 and 30 seconds. I have taken off the L/h front wheel and the CV Boot seems fine and without any leaks. The wheel spins by hand in the same manner as the R/h side. Sometimes it is present just after changing gear but really it is just intermittent. In the course of the 20 Miles I probably drove for 10 Miles without any noise and this was mixed driving using the Gear's etc. Any suggestions and thanks for the help.

If a wheel bearing is gone it should be a constant noise , not coming in and out as you describe . You probably wont be able to spin wheel fast enough to hear if noisy or not .Sometimes you can feel the roughnes if bearing worn , but hard with fwd .Couple of suggestions , check g/box oil level .Also had a similar fault on a car when the wheel alignment was out and wheel was running slightly off causing a noise .Resetting tracking cured it .

If the tracking suggestion doesn`t fix it, I would still suspect a wheel bearing- Probably just starting to go. Try driving along a quiet road and carefully move the steering left and right-this will put stress on each wheel and may increase the noise due to putting the bearing under load.

If the noise is there when driving , flick the steering and put load on one side . If transferring the load ALLEVIATES the noise , that is the opposite side to check .If really bad you can play a tune by doing this as you drive !!

It may just be tyre noise on varying road surface. Check condition of tyre aswell

That,s a strange one ,but it is possible to get a wheel bearing noise at a precise road speed ,and it could be any one of four ,best way to check is with a stethoscope on the hub and get some one to spin the wheel.
