Check light stays on

The garage put it the machine it came up with fault on the egr valve. It got changed for a new one, the light still stays on. I have also noticed a faint smell of diesel coming into the car as well on a long journey.
Can you point me in the right direction please

Check it has been plugged back in firstly and have a good look under bonnet for cause of smell incase it’s a diesel leak

Check for injector seal leakage .

wonder if EGR pipework was checked and cleaned when new valve was fitted, also passageways in cylinder head ,they can carbon up if that is the case the new EGR will not work properly ,as for smell of diesel as previously said check for any leaks from pipes hoses and injector seals
