1999 Seat Arosa cant get the gear lever to come out of park

the button wont push in to make the gear lever move into drive car starts up fine 'its just the gear lever wont move ???'has done this before months ago but went after a day now its back ??? the emc light flashed on then went of and since then wont go into drive this happened last time too .but car went ok again after a day ??? any ideas please my daughters car thanks
