2000 Rover 75 engine over heating - steam coming out

I have had smoke steam coming out of the engine when I released the oil cap and inside the cap had a white substance showing..does this mean a new casket head?..also the temp gauge keeps going up and down...do I have serious problems...please help I love this car

Hi William are you losing coolant too,this could be the head gasket if the oil is of a white mayonaise colour
