2002 Rover 75 tailgate (boot) remote release

The internal switch does not release the boot lid. It sounds several thuds, but fails to unlock. I can only open it with a key, and then only with difficulty.

If you can hear thuds it is obviously getting power to the lock . Case of stripping down trim and checking / lubricating actuator and any linkage , Could also adjust any tailgate bump rubbers out slightly .
