Check gear linkage / cables for wear and gearbox oil level .That car has a reverse gear synchro , might be that which is worn .

I have a 2001 version but it's Automatic transmission. All forward gears work without a problem but when I select reverse the car does not go backwards as it should only when revs reach 4/5k will the car jump backwards feels like brake is stuck on.
