2003 Rover 75 cold start cutting out

Car: Rover 75
Year: 2003
Variant: 1.8 club
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I am posting this enquiry for an elderly friend.
The car starts first time whatever the weather but cuts out if it is left to idle, such as when changing from reverse into first after backing out of the drive.
After warming the engine by running it for a few minutes it behaves ok.
The problem does not then reoccur all day, even if left to stand for a few hours in a cold draught.
The car runs fine in every other respect.
The plugs have been changed and I believe the garage increased the tickover speed which seemed to cure it for a few days but then it started all over again.
Has anyone an idea as my friend's garage seem to be stumped?
