2000 Rover 400 engine warning light

Car: Rover 400
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.6 auto
Categories: Leaks & Noises
After driving for a short distance the 'Check Engine' warning light illuminates. From this point on it seems asthough I have lost a degree of pwer and it really struggles to go up hills. As soon as I slow down or pull up I get clouds of white smoke billowing from my exhaust. Would appear that I am losing coolant. Would a coolant leak cause these problems or is there something else that I should be worrying about?

sound like your headgasket has gone or on is way there for you are losing water and the engine goes in to safe mode and reduces you from accelerating and doing damage to the engine so the engine check light comes on and the ecu puts the car in to safe mode but you will have to get this problem fixed before it gets worse and you wont be able to drive the car
