2000 Rover 400 mis firing?

Car: Rover 400
Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
After having done around 300 miles in the last 10 days my car has suddenly started mis firing or I think this is the case.

What happens is that when driving on occasions it started to jump/pull back as if it needed more revs to go forward.

Since then it is happening more regularly especially in built up traffic it is also starting to cut out on me.

Whilst the car has always started again it seems to need more revs in a standing position to keep it going.

The car continues to mis fire? on an iratic basis especially when I am slowing down at a junction.

I have taken it to Kwik Fit (never again) and they have confirmed that I have a new distributor cap on and he changed the plugs and whilst in the garage it did sound better but after leaving with 3 minutes of driving the same old problems appeared.

I know I have to get it fixed but it would be handy when I go to my regular garage that I can be loaded with a number of solutions for them to try.

To be fair to the chap at Kwik Fit he did only charge me a fiver for the work so I really shouldn't complain.

If anybody out there can help it would be most appreciated.

Regards

Is it a K series engine? If so sounds like it might be a head gasket problem, have a look under the coolant bottle top and the oil filler cap to see if it is all creamy, if so looks like head gasket im afraid... That would explain why your new plugs didnt last long...

I had this exact same problem, the best solution is to check the following as these were the answers given to me:

- Air, oil & fuel filters
- Spark plugs & leads (look for any fine hair line tears in the leads as these would be subjected to the elements).
- All air induction/intake tubes & pipes (again look for tears)

If all of the above are perfectly fine then the chances are that its a distributor problem. Does the car require 2,000RPM and above to actually run/pull away smoothly??

If yes then get a new distributor (the bit that sits inside the whole unit) its a simple fix and should only cost around £10...well thats all it cost me :)
