2000 Rover 25 wont rev

driveing last night pulld out of junction thought was in wrng gear as had no power then came to a holt and wont rev as if throtle cable snaped? turned of engine started fine no reving up opend bonnet an move cable by hand and reved up able to drive 25miles home? any ideas?

start by changing the air and fuel filters
