2000 Rover 25 engine not running right

Hi all, my little 25 broke down on me croossing a motorway. Thermostat housing was cracked and leaking water.
Got it towed and replaced the housing. Now its taking 20 - 30 seconds to turn over and when it does its not revving right. I can't get it to idel as it will simply cut out. in order to drive it I have to keep the revs up over 2000 and don't use the brakes !!
Could a sensor be gone somewhere ??

I guess it overheated when the water leaked out?
This may have blown your headgasket, putting water in the cylinders causing it to run badly.
You can get the headgasket checked easily at a garage. Also signs of water / yellow gunk in the oil would be a clue.
I think this would be a good place to start.
As you probably know these engines are very prone to headgasket trouble (despite being very nice to drive..)
Good luck with it.

A garage would beable to tell you by using a block tester. All this does, is measure the presence of carbon monoxide in your coolant. If carbon monoxide is present, then the head gasket has failed.

hi.wife's Rover 25 been into 3 garages changed something in the carb' ok for a week then starts revving , , the car jerks and judders all the time. Had the head skimmed and was good for a fortnight then started to rev again, on tick over it rev's at 1500+
