2000 Rover 25 transmission safe mode

Car: Rover 25
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.8 IS 16V Steptronic
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Car had been completely okay day before, I switched on the engine, spent 10 minutes digging it out of snow. Then navigated a long uphill stretch (plenty of wheel slip and high revs to get up hill).

Once at top of hill engine feels low powered, and I notice safe mode light is constantly on (when in 'D').

Is this serious? or is there a possibilty of something more minor?

start by getting engine and transmission codes read it may have just been unhappy and put car into limp home mode, but if transmission overheated due to a blocked at cooler which only showed up due to the revs uphill damage could have taken place.start with code read
