2000 Rover 25 cold start/reving issue

Car: Rover 25
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.8
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
Engine dies when I put my car into drive. It starts right up perfect but its when I go to put it into drive that you can feel the engine bog down and shut down. Once I have restart it it goes into gear without it shutting down but you can still feel the engine bogging down a bit. Once I have had it running up to temp it seams fine. Although the car seems to shift a bit hard as well when I put it into reverse. I think it might be either the coolant temp sensor or the oil pressure sensor. Do these cars have a safety sensor that shuts the engine down when the oil pressure is not up to par. NEED HELP! I really love this car and would hate to part with it.

Engine coolant temperature sensor would be a good first step to check / replace .Assume it's an automatic ? could check ATF level .
