Engine turning over - not starting

2001 Rover 25 1.4
Car: Rover 25
Year: 2001
Variant: 1.4
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I missed the garage several times - not filling up when i should have. Then I took a corner close to home and felt loss of power and a bit of spluttering when i put the clutch down. Managed to climb halfway up the hill at home, but then cut out. Tried to restart, but would not go. I was confident that it was fuel starvation until i tried to start after refueling. It turns over OK and has seemed to want too start, but this only at the end of turning over time - to no avail. Engine light stays on during turning over - seems unusual, but cant remember for sure. All EMS fuses are good. What can I check(and order). Unfortunately I'm more of a carburetor man and am pretty much in the dark here. Air lock? Blocked jets? Just don't know.
