2001 Rover 25 will not start

The car has just had another engine fitted as old one distroyed itself when the inlet cam pulley wheel gave up. I have with a friend who has done several 25, fitted a good replacement.
The engine turns over has a spark and petrol on the plugs when i have tryed to start. But it will not fire, i have timmed it and re timed it with no luck, i have replace the cam sensor and the plugs and the immobaliser apears to be cancelling.
The other thing that i have noticed is that the engine managment light stays on even when turning over and the wife assurse me it never did before but i can not remember.

is that model multi ht or coil bank?if it has 4 ht leads check the fireing order is correct.also clean plugs and dry them out.if motor turning ok maybe a tow in 2nd gear might help.
