2002 Rover 25 intermittent starting problem

I have an intermittent problem with starting on my wife's 2002 Rover 25. Sometimes the engine will fire but immediately die then refuse to restart. I have to switch off, wait a short while and try again. The battery is fine, plugs and fuel filter have been replaced. The problem seems to be associated with the immobiliser. It was suggested to me to try locking the doors with the remote then unlocking again. This seems to work most times but not always. Has anyone any ideas?
