i have a water leak at the punp but when i take the cap off the expansion tank there seems to be a lot of pressure which js released and the leak stops daft question but does the cooling work under pressure or as i suspect my thermostat is closed and caursing pressure to build up and leak out of the weakest point ie the water pump gasket

at temp the system is under pressure sounds like your water pump is on its way out i would change it and also change the thermostat for your peace of mind

can you tell where the water is leaking from, heater is not giving you hot air due to water loss. when the car is cold take the red cap off start the car and let it warm up keep topping up as the water level will fall, you'll see bubles come out of the water, turn your heater control to hot and at full blast, when you see no bubles in the water replace the radiator cap, switch your heater off, rev the car for a minute or so making sure the temperature gauge reads normal temp, turn the heater on it should give you hot air if it doesn't or goes cold after a short period then it could be your head gasket
